‘Cannon’s Hall’ was built around 1890 and has a rich Balmoral history. Gavin Souter, the author of ‘Mosman, a History’ once lived at 28 Mandolong Road. In his book he talks about the dance hall that John Cannon operated there. In 1898, 30 couples attended a “very enjoyable social given by the ladies of Mosman at Cannon’s Hall where the dancing went on until 5am”. In March 1905 there was a move by the Methodist Church to shut down “the serious menace to the Public Welfare by the carrying on of Dancing Saloons and the like during Sundays”. Dances at 28 Mandolong Road continued as late as 1912, but they didn’t operate on the Sabbath. The current owners named the property ‘Cannon’s Hall’ as a tribute to the colourful history at this address.
